Mirror finishes are highly reflective and created by polishing the stainless steel. The polishing process enhances appearance and consistency, making cleaning easier. It also masks the after-effects of welding and hides surface damage.
No. 8 Mirror finish is created by mechanically treating the surface with a series of progressively finer abrasives. Alternatively a special rolling procedure is used which can simulate the appearance of mechanical abrasion. For this stage, it is essential to remove deep scratches as any surface defects will be very noticeable on the finished product. The final process involves buffing the surface for 5-10 minutes to create a mirror-like, highly reflective finish.
A benefit of No. 8 Mirror finishing is that it improves corrosion resistance. The polishing eradicates crevices where corrosive particles can lodge themselves.

Common applications:
No. 4 Finish is produced with short, parallel polishing lines. These lines extend uniformly along the length of the coil. It is obtained by mechanically polishing with gradually finer abrasives. Depending on requirements, the final finish can be between 120 to 320 grit. High grit numbers create finer polishing lines and more reflective finishes. The surface roughness is typically Ra 25 micro-inches or less. This is a general-purpose finish, and is widely used for kitchen/restaurant equipment, food processing, and dairy equipment.

Immersion coating is the process of applying adhering layers of nobler metals to stainless steel sheet's surface by dipping in a nobler metal solution ions to produce a replacement reaction. It causes the deposition of a metallic coating on a base metal from solutions that contain coating metal. In this, one metal is typically displaced by metal ions that have lower levels of oxidation potential, relative to the metal ion being displaced.
Immersion plating is also known as metal replacement and dip plating.
